Knowing how to read a certificate is the first skill. It stops being sufficient the moment you consider that the document in your inbox might not be what it appears to be.

A PDF is a file. Anyone with an afternoon and ordinary software can change a number in one, and a screenshot of a certificate is a picture of a claim rather than the claim itself. So there are two separate questions to answer, and most buyers only ever ask the first.

Two questions, not one

  1. Is this document what it claims to be? That is a question about the document: whether the named laboratory issued it and whether its contents are as issued.
  2. Is this document about the vial I am being sold? That is a question about the link between document and material, and it is the one more often left unanswered.

A certificate can be entirely genuine and still tell you nothing useful, because it covers a batch produced eighteen months ago that has no relationship to the vial about to be shipped. Authenticity and relevance are independent, and a supplier can satisfy one while quietly failing the other.

Verifying the document

The strongest check available to a buyer costs one email. Contact the laboratory named on the certificate and ask it to confirm the report.

One condition makes that check worth doing: find the laboratory's contact details yourself. Search for the laboratory, go to its own site, use the address published there. Do not use the email address or phone number printed on the certificate you are trying to verify, and do not use a link the supplier sent you. A fabricated document can carry fabricated contact details, and writing to those confirms nothing beyond the patience of whoever answers.

Laboratories that do this work at volume generally issue a report number of their own, distinct from the supplier's batch code. That number is what a verification request should quote. A certificate carrying no identifier the issuing laboratory would recognise is difficult to verify by design.

  • Ask for the original PDF rather than an image, a screenshot or a page pasted into a product listing. An image discards everything that makes a document checkable.
  • Check that the laboratory is identified by name and by its own contact details, not only by a logo. A logo is an image file.
  • Look for a report identifier issued by the laboratory, separate from the supplier's batch reference.
  • Read the chromatogram against the summary. The trace carries axis labels, a retention time and a scale, and those should be consistent with the figures reported above them.
  • Treat a certificate on supplier letterhead with no laboratory identity as an in-house result presented as an independent one.

This is the check almost nobody performs, and it is the one that catches the most common problem, which is not forgery but substitution.

The batch reference on the certificate has to match the batch reference on the vial you receive. Not the product name, which is the same across every batch ever made. The batch code, character for character.

The test date has to sit sensibly against the production of that batch, which means before it shipped rather than after. And the certificate should cover one batch. A document listing several batches under a single set of results is describing something other than a per-batch determination.

What a good answer looks like

Ask any supplier for the certificate covering the batch they would ship you, plus the chromatogram, plus the name of the laboratory that ran it. There are only really three responses.

They send it. They explain specifically why they cannot, for instance that the batch has not yet been released and giving you the date it will be. Or they answer a question you did not ask, which is itself the answer.

How do I know if a peptide COA is fake?

Contact the laboratory named on it and ask it to confirm the report, using contact details you find yourself rather than the ones printed on the document. Ask for the original PDF instead of an image, check that a laboratory is identified by name and not only by a logo, and read the chromatogram against the summary figures. A certificate with no batch reference, no date or no named laboratory cannot be verified by anyone.

Can a certificate of analysis be genuine and still be useless?

Yes, and this is more common than forgery. A real certificate for a batch produced long before the vial you are being sold tells you nothing about that vial. Authenticity and relevance are separate questions. The batch reference on the document has to match the batch reference on the vial you receive.

Should I trust a supplier that publishes one purity figure for everything it sells?

A single figure across a catalogue is not a measurement, because purity is determined per production run by a specific method on a specific date. A supplier presenting one number as a property of its whole range is describing a marketing decision. Ask for the per-batch certificate instead.

Why ask for the chromatogram and not just the purity figure?

The figure is a summary produced by integrating the trace. The trace itself shows what the summary leaves out: shoulders on the main peak, unresolved humps, a noisy baseline. On longer molecules, where impurities elute close to the target, that difference is where the useful information sits.
